Trump says he got ‘very nice call’ from Kamala Harris after assassination bid

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he “got a very nice call” from his Democratic rival Kamala Harris just days after the former US President survived an attempted assassination at his golf club in Florida.
Trump made the remarks during a Fox News town hall with Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday night. Harris’s call to Trump came a day after US President Joe Biden spoke to his predecessor about “Secret Service protection”.
“President Biden called me yesterday (Tuesday). He was very nice… a nice conversation. I appreciate that he called,” Trump said at the town hall.
On similar lines, the Republican presidential candidate said of his conversation with Harris, “I got a very nice call from Kamala… It was very and we appreciated that.”
He, however, reiterated that “we have to take back our country. We have to win. We are going to win. We are going to make America great again”.
Meanwhile, the White House described the call as a “cordial and brief conversation”, adding that Harris spoke to Trump directly “to express that she is grateful he is safe”.
In an interview on Wednesday in Philadelphia, the US Vice President also confirmed that she called her Republican rival and “checked on him to see if he was OK. And I told him what I’ve said publicly, there is no place for political violence in our country”.
“I’m in this election, this race, for many reasons, including to fight for our democracy,” she added.
This was the second time in two months that Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt after a bullet grazed his ear at a rally in Pennsylvania. A week later, President Biden withdrew ended his re-election bid.
On Sunday, a Secret Service agent spotted the suspected gunman at the Florida golf course, glimpsing the muzzle of his AK-47-style rifle. The agent opened fire, driving him away before he had a direct line of sight to Trump or could fire a shot.
The 58-year-old suspect, Ryan Routh, was arrested shortly after.
